Semester Reflection

  1. What are you better at now than you were at the end of the previous academic year? Name all of the ways that these improvements were made possible.
I feel as if I am a stronger writer now. Especially with a research paper my writing is more effective and my citations are better. This was also the first time I had to write small paragraphs for each citation so that was beneficial to learn. I also think that the way you graded our drafts, you were very attentive and gave a lot of helpful and specific critiques which were also beneficial and were clear and direct. A lot of teachers are more vague when critiquing which isn’t helpful.
  2. What are you most proud of from the past academic year? Why does this make you proud?
I am most proud of staying consistent, disciplined and motivated. I continued to get good grades this semester from last semester which was good.
  3. What went well this past academic year? What tools, supports or resources aided your success?
I enjoyed my classes. I was attentive in each class and I also thought that the plenary classes, although boring at times, were very beneficial because they taught me various resources that I wouldn’t initially have known such as fellowships, and internships.
  4. What did not go well this past academic year? What was missing that made this experience challenging or undesirable?
Last semester was easier than this semester for me personally just because this semester I definitely had more to juggle with two jobs. Last semester I focused more on school but this semester I had to divide my attention which gave me much less time to be as efficient with my schoolwork. I ended up putting more of my time into work unfortunately because it ended up consuming me however I think it definitely taught me that trying to balance everything causes me to be less efficient in each task I’m trying to balance. This was definitely a valuable lesson which I needed so I don’t take on too much again.
  5. What insight did you gain about your own needs for mitigating challenges? Where or how can you fulfill these needs in the future?
I learned not to take on too much because that will lead to me not being as efficient in each task I am trying to balance. School is the priority at the moment and my grades matter more than any job I am taking on right now. My jobs right now are temporary while school and my gpa is permanent.
  6. What did you learn from overcoming challenges? How will you remember what you learned and apply it when a similar issue arises?
    To always prioritize school
  7. When did you feel happiest or most at ease this year? How can you experience those moments more frequently?
I felt the most at ease when I would have all my work done and nothing to worry about. In order to experience these moments again I can do my work in advance to have these moments last longer
  8. What moments are you proud of? What can you do to celebrate yourself?
I am most proud of getting all my work done. I think the quality of my work was good too. My grades were good and I was efficient. For everything I was balancing I think I did pretty good. I could’ve done better but I could’ve done worse as well.
  9. What new ideas, information, resources or research made a positive difference for you this year? What was helpful about these things?
I definitely think that learning about fellowships, internships, how to budget my money and learning about different majors was helpful and beneficial to me.

Short Answer: Course Specific (only this course): cite assignments from the course (40-word min each)

  1. How has your understanding of the meanings behind (and usefulness of) genre, medium, author’s intent, and audience changed?
It helped me understand why different genres are used for what and how being selective with your genre can allow you to spread your information most effectively
  2. How has your understanding of how to navigate different writing situations/rhetorical situations (different genres to write in or audiences to write for etc.) changed?
I produced a poster, which I never did before. It allowed me to see the patterns for this genre and why people choose this genre to spread their information
  3. How has your writing process changed or evolved after this semester and how has the class affected this process?
I think my writing process has gotten stronger. The specific and clear critiques of my draft was very helpful and allowed me to fix small errors I wouldn’t initially have noticed
  4. You produced a work that had you create for a new audience: explain (using genre, medium, and audience understanding) how it was effective for the audience you chose.
This was effective because posters allow not only aesthetics but quick and concise information that allows the audience to learn more through little.
  5. Knowing what you know now (from having taken this class) how would you approach a situation in the future in which you were asked to write in a new genre and for a new audience?
I would be selective with my genre depending on what my topic is and how my audience is looking.
  6. How has your understanding of the research process–how it is and how it should be conducted–been affected by this course? And how might this help in the future?
My research process has also gotten stronger. I used around 5 sources for the feature article. I even produced my own source, a survey I created which I thought was pretty interesting. I also had never created a google survey or created my own source before. This class helped me learn how to do this.
  7. How has your ability to compose your own positions, arguments or stances been affected by the course?
I have gotten stronger in my stances. My feature article consisted of a lot of passion and emotion which had definitely strengthened my voice and stance.
